Hospital's staff increased 7% since UPMC merger, president says

UPMC Somerset (Pa.) Hospital's total staff has increased by nearly 7 percent since it merged with Pittsburgh-based UPMC four years ago, one of many signs that leads hospital president Andrew Rush to believe the move is paying off, according to The Tribune-Democrat.

The merger has increased Somerset Hospital's workforce by 70 employees, according to the report. It has also had 216 new hires since 2021, one of the lowest turnover rates in the health system.

"At a time when many hospitals are losing staff, we instead have grown," Mr. Rush said during the hospital's annual public meeting on March 22. "We have grown with people who take care of our patients."

Mr. Rush highlighted several other achievements since the affiliation, including the opening of a $4 million cancer center, plans for a $16 million, 24-bed behavioral health expansion and plans to more than double the size of a primary care practice in Davidsville, Pa.
