Bullying, condescending communication and lack of representation are all signs of a toxic work environment, according to a July 5 MIT Sloan article.
After reviewing more than 1 million workplace reviews on Glassdoor, a group of researchers from MIT Sloan School of Management identified these five common traits of a toxic workplace:
- Poor and non-inclusive representation of employees of different races, genders sexual orientation, etc.
- Lack of courtesy and consideration between colleagues and a disrespectful manner of communication.
- Dishonest behavior and unethical abuses of regulation and policy.
- Work environment in which colleagues undermine each other.
- Management that talks down, condescends and openly bullies its employees.
