1 in 10 Wisconsin hospital jobs remain vacant: Report

One in 10 positions are vacant in Wisconsin hospitals, representing almost 10,000 job vacancies statewide, a Wisconsin Hospital Association annual workforce report found.

The report compared employment statistics in Wisconsin hospitals from 2020 to 2022.

The report found 1 in 4 licensed practical nurses and 1 in 5 certified registered nurse anesthetists employed by hospitals are nearing retirement. Additionally, the median age of registered nurses is rising.

The worst vacancy rates at hospitals are in front-line technical positions. Turnover is over 20% for eight specialties: certified nursing assistants, lab technicians, pharmacy technicians, certified medical assistants, licensed practical nurses, respiratory therapists, surgical technicians and registered nurses.

"The condition of the Wisconsin healthcare workforce heading into 2023 might best be described as critical but stable," the report said.
