Union continues efforts despite Tufts, Boston Medical Center merger fallout: 3 things to know

The Services Employees International Union, Local 1199, continues to move forward with a campaign to unionize workers at Boston-based Tufts Medical Center, even though it and Boston Medical Center, the largest safety-net hospital in Massachusetts, have scrapped their merger plans, according to a Boston Globe report.

Here are three things to know about the union and its efforts.

1. The SEIU represents about 2,500 workers at Boston Medical Center.

2. In a statement, Veronica Turner, executive vice president of the union, said "If anything, this news (of the merger being called off) underscores the uncertainty facing workers at Tufts Medical Center and the need for Tufts staff to have a real voice in the future of their hospital."

3. The workforce at Tufts includes 1,056 union nurses who are members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association.
