Richmond University Medical Center nurse strike averted: 3 things to know

Nurses at Staten Island, N.Y.-based Richmond University Medical Center, represented by the New York State Nurses Association, reached a tentative contract agreement with the hospital in time to avert a strike, according to a Staten Island Advance report.

Here are three things to know about the tentative agreement.

1. The details of the agreement have not yet been disclosed. However, William Smith, a Richmond University Medical Center spokesman, did say that the hospital "believe[s] it recognizes the contributions our nurses make to the safe and quality care provided at Richmond University Medical Center," according to the report. Mr. Smith did not discuss specific terms of the agreement.

2. The agreement is subject to ratification by NYSNA member nurses.

3. The negotiations come after nurses from Richmond University Medical Center and Staten Island (N.Y.) University Hospital voted to go on a one-day strike if the hospitals and the NYSNA did not reach an agreement on staffing issues. Nurses from Staten Island University Hospital are still planning a one-day strike beginning at 7 a.m. July 8.
