The New York State Nurses Association union and the NYC Hospital Alliance have reached a tentative four-year agreement that covers approximately 8,500 nurses.
The union represents 37,000 nurses throughout the state of New York, and the NYC Hospital Alliance represents five New York City-based hospitals: The Mount Sinai Hospital, Mount Sinai St. Luke's, Mount Sinai Roosevelt, Montefiore Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Here are four things to know about the agreement.
1. Details of the agreement have not yet been disclosed.
2. In response to the agreement, Bruce McIver, lead negotiator for the NYC Hospital Alliance, said in a news release, "We are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement. Our nurses are the best in healthcare and they play an essential role in why these hospitals are nationally recognized for the excellent care they provide."
3. NYSNA President Judy Sheridan-Gonzalez, RN, also responded to the agreement, saying the nurses "remain committed to provide the highest quality care possible for all our patients."
4. The agreement comes shortly after union nurses at all five NYC Hospital Alliance hospitals authorized a strike. No strike date was scheduled. However, the NYSNA could have directed the nurses to issue a 10-day strike notice whenever the nurses chose.
