Nurses to strike at Shore Medical Center

Nurses at Shore Medical Center in Somers Point, N.J., members of the Shore Nurses Union, plan to strike for one day on Oct. 22, according to a report from The Press of Atlantic City.

Last month, the nurses made plans to strike for one day Oct. 8. However, the union postponed that strike last week to prepare for the potential impact of Hurricane Joaquin.

The 340 nurses at Shore Medical Center, who have been working without a contract since September 2014, are striking after negotiations between the hospital and union officials for a new contract were unsuccessful. Among the issues discussed during negotiations over the last year are salary, benefits and time off, according the report.

According to The Press of Atlantic City, Shore Medical Center expressed disappointment about the union's decision to strike.

"While we are confused as to why the union would issue a strike notice while we were making progress in negotiations at the bargaining table, we are well prepared with staffing in all areas to ensure high quality and safe patient care," Brian Cahill, a hospital spokesman, said, according to the report.

The strike will start at 7 a.m. Oct. 22 and end at 6:59 a.m. Oct. 23.
