North Shore-LIJ Health System in Great Neck, N.Y., and Hempstead-based Hofstra University plan to create the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Graduate Nursing and Health Professions, the organizations announced Tuesday.
The school will offer a three-year part-time program allowing students to earn a master's degree in nursing as a family nurse practitioner or an adult-gerontology acute care nurse practitioner. Additionally, Hofstra's two existing programs in Physician Assistant Studies will be part of the new school.
North Shore-LIJ's hospitals, outpatient facilities, simulation center and other resources will be used as learning labs as part of the program, according to Michael Dowling, president and CEO of the system.
"Through this new School of Graduate Nursing and Health Professions, we are taking another bold step toward redesigning both medical and nursing education to reflect the rapid changes occurring in the way healthcare is accessed, delivered and paid for in this country," he said.
Kathleen Gallo, PhD, RN, North Shore-LIJ's senior vice president and chief learning officer and associate professor of science education at Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, was appointed founding dean of the new school.
State approval of the school is still pending.
