Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn Sends Layoff Notices to All 1,544 Employees

Financially beleaguered Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., has sent layoff notices to all 1,544 of its employees and asked a bankruptcy court to approve its closing, according to a report by The New York Times.

A hearing on the closing of the hospital, which serves a predominantly African-American and Caribbean section of Brooklyn, will be held Aug. 15 in United States Bankruptcy Court, Eastern District of New York, according to the NYT.

If its closure is approved, inpatient admissions would end the day of the hearing. The emergency room would close Sept. 14, and inpatient services would end Sept. 15. Interfaith would close its outpatient programs a month later on Oct. 15, and rehabilitation programs would end Nov. 14, The New York Times reported.

This is not the only hospital in Brooklyn with plans to close: Long Island College Hospital plans to shut its doors July 29.
