220 California healthcare workers vote to unionize: 4 things to know

Two hundred and twenty healthcare workers at Orange, Calif.-based Chapman Global Medical Center voted Sept. 15 to join SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West.

Here are three things to know about the decision.

1. The vote passed by a 3-1 margin, with more than 75 percent of eligible employees participating, according to the union.

2. Chapman hospital workers affected by the vote include licensed vocational nurses, cooks, respiratory therapists, secretaries, nursing assistants, admitting representatives, medical records clerks and janitors.

3. A SEIU-UHW spokesman told the Orange County Register that labor negotiations with Chapman administrators have not yet begun.
