The following 11 hospital and health system layoffs and workforce reductions were covered by Becker's Hospital Review in the last two weeks. They are listed below by the number of employees and/or positions affected.
1. Cone Health Plans 150 Layoffs, Other Cuts
Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health plans to eliminate 300 jobs over the next three months, resulting in 150 layoffs. The 300 positions account for about 3 percent of Cone Health's workforce. The cuts will affect employees from all levels of the organization with minimal impact on patient care.
2. BJC HealthCare Cuts 160 Jobs in System's First-Ever Layoffs
St. Louis-based BJC HealthCare laid off 160 employees, the first layoffs in its 20-year history. Employees across the system were affected, including employees who provided direct patient care. BJC officials cited reimbursement changes as the cause of the layoffs.
3. Shore Health System Announces 48 Layoffs
Shore Health System in Easton, Md., is laying off 48 employees effective July 1 and cutting 52 full-time equivalent vacant positions.
4. Sierra Vista Regional Health Center Cuts 13% of Workforce
Sierra Vista (Ariz.) Regional Health Center eliminated 94 positions, or about 13.3 percent of its workforce. The workforce cuts led to 59 layoffs; 35 of the positions were empty.
5. St. Elizabeth Medical Center Axes 50 Positions
Utica, N.Y.-based St. Elizabeth Medical Center eliminated 50 positions, leading to 10 layoffs. The layoffs have affected executive leadership, administrators and patient-care employees. St. Elizabeth officials cited Medicaid cuts, as well as reduced Medicare reimbursements, as the reason for the workforce reduction.
6. Carondelet Health Network Lays Off 40 in Corporate Office
Tucson, Ariz.-based Carondelet Health Network laid off 40 corporate office employees. The system is restructuring its staff, and the layoffs are a result of its restructuring project. Carondelet officials cited sequestration and the cost of caring for the uninsured as reasons for the layoffs.
7. Providence Hospital in D.C. Lays Off Dozens
Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C., laid off about 40 employees as part of the hospital's cost-reduction efforts. The hospital is owed upwards of $2.5 million from the district's Medicaid contractor, which collapsed in April.
8. Providence Hospital in Alabama to Lay Off 35
Mobile, Ala.-based Providence Hospital announced plans to lay off 35 people and restructure some areas of its operations. The restructuring includes work redesign, changing staff hours and benefit changes. The hospital cited increased charity care, healthcare reform and reimbursement changes as the reason for the layoffs and restructuring.
9. University of Missouri Health Care to Cut Hours, Lay Off Employees
University of Missouri Health Care in Columbia plans to lay off or reduce the hours and pay of 35 employees and eliminate 90 vacant positions. Reduced Medicare reimbursements and the state's decision to not expand Medicaid were cited as the reason for the cuts.
10. St. Mary's Medical Center to Lay Off 25
Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare Corp. notified 25 employees at St. Mary's Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Fla., they will be laid off. The layoffs will bring staffing levels in line with patient volume.
11. Mercy Memorial Hospital System to Lay Off Employees, Tighten Budget
Monroe, Mich.-based Mercy Memorial Hospital System is planning to lay off 20 workers by July and cut the hours of 70 other employees. The workforce changes, along with other cost-cutting measures, are expected to save the system about $13 million.
