New York expands mental health telemedicine regulations: 3 notes

The New York State Office of Mental Health broadened its telemedicine guidelines for psychiatric care so more patients can receive mental health services across the state.

Three notes:

1. Prior to the regulations expansion announced July 9, only psychiatrists and psychiatric nurse practitioners were allowed to use telemedicine technology to provide care.

2. With the new regulations, mental health telemedicine is open to the following care providers: psychologists, licensed social workers, mental health counselors, marriage and family therapists, creative arts therapists and psychoanalysts.

3. Patients attend virtual appointments from anywhere within the state and temporary locations are also permitted outside of New York.
