Amita Health St. Mary's Hospital Kankakee (Ill.) launched telemedicine services as part of its neurology and neurosurgery program.
The teleneurology program aims to provide patients with quick service in the event of head injury, stroke and other neurological issues.
Using video and audio technology, a Lisle, Ill.-based Amita Health on-call teleneurologist establishes a high-resolution video connection to perform a neurological examination on the patient and discuss any findings and treatment options with the hospital's on-site clinical team.
The new virtual care services support Amita's ability to provide neurological assessments 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The health system is a joint operating company formed by Altamonte Springs, Fla.-based AdventHealth and Ascension in St. Louis. Amita comprises 19 hospitals and more than 230 sites of care.
