Teladoc Health experienced several key developments in 2019, from launching new virtual care programs to undergoing C-suite level leadership changes.
Here are seven things to know about the telehealth company at the start of the new decade.
1. In February, Teladoc reported $350 million in U.S. subscription revenue for fiscal year 2018, a 78 percent increase year over year. The telehealth company posted 2.64 million total visits for the year, which continued to rise throughout 2019. In the first quarter of 2019, Teladoc reported 1.06 million total telehealth visits, and for the year's third quarter, Teladoc posted 2.9 million total visits.
2. Throughout 2019, Teladoc launched several new programs and organizations. The telehealth provider rolled out an online treatment program for back pain, called Teladoc Back Care, as well as virtual care personalized nutrition counseling service named Teladoc Nutrition. The company also established a patient safety organization for virtual care and a new physician-led virtual center for patients with a range of complex medical needs, dubbed Teladoc Medical Experts.
3. Teladoc integrated a new feature called Clinical WorkScope with its platform in February. The new addition helps hospitals and health systems offer virtual care for multiple specialties, leaving workflows consistent with each individual organization's in-person operating model.
4. Teladoc made strides to expand globally in 2019, with the acquisition of France-based telehealth provider MédecinDirect as well as its partnership with Johnston Group, a Canada-based payer. Teladoc also in March launched the Teladoc Telemedicine Service in Canada, making its virtual care services available in both the U.S. and Canada.
5. The company also established key partnerships to drive strategy and growth this year. In April, Teladoc began working with Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center to develop its first consumer-specific pediatric telehealth platform. Based on Teladoc's current model, the jointly developed platform will be modified to accommodate pediatric-specific workflows. Teladoc also formed a partnership with Epic, offering its virtual care platform to the EHR vendor's clients through the Epic App Orchard.
6. Over the summer, Teladoc welcomed both Mala Murthy and David Sides to serve as CFO and COO, respectively.
7. Various healthcare organizations partnered with Teladoc to expand their virtual care services in 2019. Minute Clinic, CVS' retail medical clinic, launched Teladoc-powered programs in 26 states, including Arkansas, Hawaii and Texas, and Cincinnati-based TriHealth partnered with Teladoc to roll out a new virtual care program.
