One-third of cancer patients suffer financial hardship due to drug costs: 4 things to know

Patient Power, a global provider of educational audio and video content for people with cancer, surveyed more than 1,000 cancer patients and found that 1/3 of them undergo financial strain as a result of high drug costs.

Here are four things to know about the survey, which was launched in May:

  1. About 5 percent of survey participants reported spending more than $5,000 a month on cancer drugs. More than 10 percent reported spending between $1,000 and $4,999 a month.

  2. Nearly 20 percent of respondents or their family members have been living with cancer for more than 10 years.

  3. Approximately 35 percent of respondents said they receive financial support from an assistance program.

  4. Around 9 percent of participants reported being denied assistance.
