New Jersey's Office of the Attorney General finalized rules limiting drug companies' payments and gifts to healthcare providers, reports Policy and Medicine.
Here are three things to know.
1. As of Jan. 15, all contracts and payments between New Jersey clinicians and drugmakers are subject to a $10,000 annual cap. The rule includes payments for consulting and speaking engagements, but exempts research and education-related payments.
- Drug companies must also follow a $15 cap on meals with clinicians.
- Clinicians are forbidden from accepting other gifts from drugmakers, such as tickets to a sporting event or gift certificates.
"The rules in this chapter regulate the receipt and acceptance by prescribers of anything of value from pharmaceutical manufacturers to ensure that such relationships do not interfere with prescribers' independent professional judgment," the official rule document states.
