TimerCap, a manufacturer of pill caps equipped with a digital clock reminder to promote safe medication use, recently launched a new wireless Bluetooth pill bottle cap that syncs with the Medisafe smart phone medication management platform, allowing patients and caregivers to accurately track prescription medication usage.
The new Bluetooth cap is capable of sending caregivers an alert if the medication bottle is opened at the incorrect time, which can help prevent accidental overdoses in addition to improper dosing.
While studies have shown packaging interventions, similar to those used for birth control, can improve medication adherence, these types of containers have not been the standard for prescription medications like opioids.
During a phone interview with Becker's, TimerCap CEO Larry Twersky cited the importance of medication adherence as the nation continues to struggle with the prevalence of opioid addiction and overdoses. Mr. Twersky expressed a desire to increase the use of compliance packaging to improve adherence and decrease in-home drug diversion.
"The product a diversion alert tactic. It is a powerful tool of diversion detection and self-awareness," said Mr. Twersky. "We're [the medical industry] creating opioid abusers every day because we are not putting opioids in compliance packaging."
