Group purchasing organizations and provider members saw a 13 percent average increase in the amount of product information published on the Global Data Synchronization Network between fall 2015 and spring 2016, according to the Healthcare Supply Chain Association's Committee for Healthcare eStandards.
In 2014, HSCA partnered with GSI and the Healthcare Industry Supply Chain Institute to launch the Total Visibility Project. The initiative encourages suppliers to publish a set of common product attributes on the GDSN to ensure hospitals and other providers have sufficient access to reliable product information, according to a news release.
"Although participating GPOs revealed an average of more than 204,000 items for which product information was available, items published to the GDSN still represent substantially less than half of all items present in a typical GPO catalog," said Curt Miller, executive director of CHeS. "We encourage all suppliers to openly publish item information to the GDSN so that the industry can reach a critical mass of standardized item information and help ensure that the right product gets to the right patient at the right time."
