FDA OKs new flu vaccine

Protein Sciences earned Food and Drug Administration approval for its quadrivalent formulation of the Flublok influenza vaccine, reports Monthly Prescribing Reference.

Flublok Quadrivalent contains three strains of the flu found in the original Flublok vaccine, as well as an additional B strain, according to the report. While most vaccines are commonly made through a process involving chicken eggs, Flublok relies on technology that rearranges genetic material to produce the vaccination.

In a recent clinical study of 9,000 adults age 50 and older, participants who received Flublok Quadrivalent were 40 percent less likely to catch cell-culture confirmed influenza than those who received a different quadrivalent flu vaccine on the market.
