FDA approves St. Jude Medical's stroke prevention device

Saint Paul, Minn.-based St. Jude Medical earned Food and Drug Administration approval for the Amplatzer PFO Occluder.

The device, used to lower the risk of stroke, is intended for patients who already had one stroke caused by a blood clot passing through a hole in the heart and into the brain.

The device prevents a second stroke from occurring by closing up the hole in the patient's heart. Clinicians insert the Amplatzer PFO Occluder through a catheter in a patient's leg and into the patient's heart.
