FDA approves Abbott's intraocular lenses to treat cataracts

Abbott's Tecnis Symfony Intraocular Lenses earned FDA approval for the treatment of cataracts.

During cataract surgery, clinicians remove the eye's natural lens and replace it with an artificial lens. While most intraocular lenses are monofocal — only allowing people to see clearly at a distance — the Tecnis Symfony lens provides patients with a full range of vision.

The lens is approved for patients with presbyopia — the loss of ability to focus on close up objects — and astigmatism, which causes blurry or distorted vision.

Abbott did not say when it expected to launch the new lenses.
