The FDA approved the nation's first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker July 5, according to devicemaker Abbott.
The product is Abbott's Aveir system, which is the world's first approved dual-chamber pacemaker. Other leadless pacemakers are single chamber, meaning they connect to one chamber in the patient's heart. With a dual-chamber pacemaker, the device regulates contractions in the right ventricle and right atrium.
Aveir is also one-tenth the size of normal pacemakers — or smaller than a AAA battery — Abbott said in a news release.
