Inside Rx, a new discount program spearheaded by Express Scripts, aims to lower out-of-pocket drug costs for patients, reports CBS News.
Through the program, uninsured patients or those with high deductibles can receive price discounts for 40 brand name drugs used to treat illnesses such as asthma, diabetes and depression.
"They are essentially going to pay, for the 40 drugs in this program, what large insurance companies typically pay," Tim Wentworth, president and CEO of Express Scripts, said May 8 on "CBS This Morning."
Mr. Wentworth said Express Scripts partnered with eight major drugmakers, 40,000 pharmacies and Good RX — its technology partner — to create the program.
Inside Rx does not apply to individuals covered through Medicare, Medicaid, Tricare or other state- or federally-funded benefit plans, according to the report. Eligible patients can visit Inside Rx's website to download a free membership card, which can be used to receive discounts at participating pharmacies.
