Amazon wins patent for self-destructing drones: 3 things to know

Amazon earned a patent for a drone designed to self-destruct during emergencies, reports NBC News.

Here are three things to know.

1. The drone is intended to "strategically disassemble" in mid-air during an emergency to reduce the chances of a crash causing serious property damage or human injuries, according to the report.

2. The drone would use an onboard computing system to analyze the current situation and determine how to respond.

3. The self-destructing drone is one of many innovative patents Amazon has filed in the past year, including a floating warehouse and an underground delivery system using tunnels.
