In 2020, artificial intelligence will face more ethical challenges and gene therapy commercialization will hasten, Frost & Sullivan analysts predict.
Each year, analysts at the research and consulting firm predict themes and global forces that will define the next 12 months in healthcare.
Below are six predictions for healthcare in 2020, according to Frost & Sullivan:
1. By the end of 2020, 40 percent of U.S. health systems and payers will use social determinants of health data to manage risk, facilitate patient outreach or make business decisions.
2. As artificial intelligence gets more advanced and is tasked with helping physicians detect and diagnose diseases, it will also face more ethical challenges, including the question of liability in the case of an inaccuracy.
3. Gene therapy commercialization will hasten as annuity-based reimbursement models gain popularity. Annuity-based reimbursement occurs when payments are made at equal intervals.
4. Interoperability, or the ability for multiple tech systems to communicate with one another, will finally take a step forward in government policies and vendor acceptance.
5. Health systems across the nation will continue to invest in telehealth as it becomes a standard of care option for primary care visits.
6. 'Retailization' of the healthcare industry will continue as such players as CVS Health, Walmart and Best Buy enter the industry.
