Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital's conversion to a freestanding emergency room will affect hundreds of jobs.
The Houston hospital, owned by Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare, will lay off 586 employees May 17, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice filed with the state. However, some of the affected employees have been offered similar positions within the health system.
"Our human resources department is currently working directly with the 586 employees at Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital affected by this realignment," a spokesperson for HCA Houston Healthcare told the Houston Business Journal. "At this point, about 200 employees have been offered opportunities at other facilities within HCA Houston Healthcare. Another approximately 100 employees are in the process of being tendered offers, while others are in different stages of the recruiting process within HCA Houston Healthcare. Of the remaining employees, many have either accepted voluntary severance or are retiring."
HCA Houston Healthcare is transitioning Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital to a freestanding ER as part of a broader realignment of services in the area. After the change is made, HCA will continue to operate several full-service hospitals in the region, including 163-bed HCA Houston Healthcare North Cypress.
As a freestanding ER, Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital will become a campus of HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball (Texas).
