West Virginia University Medicine, the state's largest health system, will keep expanding in nearby areas, the health system's CEO told The State Journal.
Albert Wright, PharmD, president and CEO of the Morgantown-based health system, said it is likely WVU Medicine will continue to expand throughout West Virginia and surrounding states in the coming years. In the past few years, the health system has grown to 11 system hospitals, four managed hospitals, two affiliate hospitals and dozens of clinics across West Virginia, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryand.
"Our mission is primarily focused on the state of West Virginia, but when you get into those [border] areas of Ohio, Maryland, Pennsylvania and maybe in Virginia out in the eastern panhandle, those are areas where our brand plays well and where patients are seeking WVU Medicine," Dr. Wright told The State Journal. "I don't see us building sites in Phoenix or Jacksonville [Miss.] or Chicago or overseas, but in those border counties where we have significant presence and our brand plays well, we're not afraid to embrace that."
WVU Medicine's expansion isn't limited to hospitals and clinics. In May, the system also announced plans to acquire The Health Plan, a West Virginia-based health insurer.
