University of Rochester Medical Center in NY Plans $180M Children's Hospital

The University of Rochester (N.Y.) Medical Center announced new plans for a $180 million children's hospital.

The 245,000-square-foot Golisano Children's Hospital will be attached to the medical center and Strong Memorial Hospital. The hospital will include a hospitality suite where parents can shower, eat meals and do laundry; a resource library; a respite lounge; and a concierge service to help parents with errands. The facility will also feature a toddler playroom, playdeck, school room, teen room, an outdoor rooftop play space and a healing garden.

Groundbreaking is scheduled for this summer or early fall with an expected opening in 2015. New pediatric operating rooms and the new Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit/Pediatric Intensive Care Unit will open in 2016. Later, the hospital's Ronald McDonald House will be relocated.

A $100 million campaign for the new hospital and enhanced pediatric programs was launched in October 2011 and is part of the $650 million campaign to revamp the entire URMC, called The Meliora Challenge: The Campaign for the University of Rochester.
