UK Looks Overseas to Expand NHS Brand

The United Kingdom's National Health Service is looking overseas to expand its brand, according to a Guardian report.

The Department of Health and UK Trade and Investment department are encouraging hospitals to establish clinics abroad to generate needed revenue for NHS.

UKTI and DH think the NHS should model its international expansion on some major brands in the U.S. such as Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic and Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore, which offer healthcare services abroad, according to the report.

The U.K. government is considering building markets in India and China. Some clinics run by NHS trusts already exist in other countries, such Moorfields Eye Hospital and Great Ormond Street children's hospital in the Middle East, according to the report.

Some oppose the initiative, however, concerned that the focus abroad will distract NHS from problems at home, according to the report.
