Report: 10 "Very Important" Factors Contributing to Patients' Healthcare Experience

The physician's overall knowledge, training and expertise is the most important factor contributing to patients' positive experience with a healthcare provider, according to findings by Harris Interactive.

Harris Interactive surveyed more than 2,000 U.S. adults on their healthcare experiences. They found 84 percent of respondents had visited a physician's office within the past year, among which 47 percent reported being very satisfied with their last medical visit.

Patients who had seen a healthcare provider at least once in the past year indicated the extent to which different factors will be important in ensuring they have a positive overall experience when visiting a healthcare provider in the future. Respondents reported the following 10 factors as "very important" to their experience.

1. The doctor's overall knowledge, training and expertise — 83 percent
2. The doctor's ability to access your overall medical history — 62 percent
3. Time spent with the doctor — 59 percent
4. Ability to communicate with the doctor outside of an appointment, either by phone or email — 43 percent
5. Ease of making an appointment — 42 percent
6. Time spent in the waiting room — 40 percent
7. Efficient and simple billing process — 38 percent
8. Convenience of the doctor's office location — 37 percent
9. Minimized paperwork — 29 percent
10. Appearance and atmosphere of the doctor's office — 26 percent
