The Ohio State University College of Nursing in Columbus announced plans to open its first nurse practitioner-led health clinic Jan. 14, a sign of the growing role of nurses in healthcare.
Ohio State Total Health & Wellness at University Hospital East will be entirely run by nurse practitioners and will offer primary care that addresses physical and mental health needs. The practice will also focus on the management of chronic conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease; heart attack and stroke prevention; lifestyle interventions for adolescents with weight problems and depression; and a federally recommended depression screening initiative, according to the release.
The 3,400-square-foot center, which will also be the first at Ohio State to be operated by the College of Nursing, will be located on a floor of the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center's University Hospital East in Columbus.
The clinic's nurse practitioner leadership is an example of how healthcare reform is changing the way healthcare is being delivered. "I predict that in the not-too-distant future, a substantial portion of primary care will be provided by nurse practitioners and physician assistants, so ensuring that all healthcare providers are allowed to practice to their full scope will be critical for providing access and comprehensive services to all of the additional people who will soon have health insurance," said Bernadette Melnyk, dean of the College of Nursing and chief wellness officer at Ohio State, in the release.
The new practice will operate independently but will function as an extension of the Wexner Medical Center's Primary Care Network, which will allow it to share the medical center's computer services for billing and medical information management, according to the release.
