St. Louis-based Mercy announced the opening of the new Mercy Hospital Joplin (Mo.) nearly a year after a tornado destroyed the original St. John's Regional Medical Center.
The new hospital has been built in only eight months using modular construction, in which a factory assembles large parts — or modules — of the building and transports them to a prepared site.
The facility includes an emergency department, surgical areas, inpatient wings, new imaging equipment, a pharmacy and a chapel. The building is 30 percent stronger than the requirements for the previous building and has glass that can withstand winds of 200 mph, according to the release.
Mercy is also building a new Mercy Hospital Joplin campus using traditional construction that will encompass 600,000 square feet — four times the size of the current hospital.
