Florida Hospital in Orlando is adopting a new strategy to gain a certificate of need for a new hospital, according to an Orlando Business Journal report.
The hospital plans to build a hospital in Winter Garden, Fla., in the future. Instead of applying for a CON immediately, however, the hospital plans to first build a freestanding emergency department and medical office building, which, because they are outpatient facilities, do not require a CON in Florida. Then, when the population increases, the hospital will apply for a CON for a new inpatient facility. Jody Barry, Florida Hospital's director of facilities administration, said this strategy will help establish the system in the market, according to the report.
Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America is using this approach with its new hospital in Poinciana, Fla., which broke ground in February, according to the report.
