CaroMont Health, Veterans Compromise on New Hospital Name

Gastonia, N.C.-based CaroMont Health and the Gaston County Veterans Council have reached a compromise over the controversial name change of Gaston Memorial Hospital to CaroMont Regional Medical Center, according to a Charlotte Observer report.

CaroMont Health's announcement of its flagship hospital's new name in the beginning of April sparked opposition from area veterans, which said they weren't consulted and that the new name "didn't reflect the hospital's history as a living memorial to those who died in World War II," according to the report. Veterans played a key role in expanding CaroMont Regional Medical Center, then known as Gastonia City Hospital, after World War II, and the hospital was renamed Gaston Memorial in honor of local veterans who died in the war, according to the report.

To reflect this history while keeping the new name CaroMont Regional Medical Center, health system officials and the Veterans Council agreed to name the campus and grounds Gaston Memorial Medical Park and to name campus streets Gaston Memorial Drive, Veterans Lane and other names honoring veterans. In addition, CaroMont will build a monument housing an eternal flame on the hospital campus to recognize veterans, according to the report.
