U.S. hospitals can overcome innovation challenges by taking cues from other businesses, according to a Quartz report.
Matthew McCreight, a managing partner at Schaffer Consulting, presents four top challenges identified through interviews with hospital leaders and possible solutions:
1. A lack of external focus. Hospitals should start with customers' needs to inspire innovation.
2. The case for change is unclear. Hospitals need to unite stakeholders toward a common goal.
Solution: "Devote resources to innovation," Mr. McCreight wrote. Hospitals should invest the people, time and money needed to support innovation.
3. Innovation is postponed. Short-term problems overtake long-term, innovation needs.
Solution: Prioritize innovation. Hospitals should set bold, long-term organizational goals.
4. We don't know how to innovate.
Solution: "Create a process for innovation," Mr. McCreight wrote. Hospitals should establish a system for submitting and testing innovation ideas.
