Officials of New Jersey's Bergen County have sued the operator of its public hospital for allegedly failing to provide public documents officials need to determine the hospital's future before the lease expires in five years, according to a report from The Record.
The operator of Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus, N.J., is Bergen Regional Medical Center LP. County officials claim the operator is stalling in its record-sharing to force the county to renew its county lease, which is set to expire in March 2017. The operator allegedly responded to officials' records request with a proposal to extend the lease for another 10 years.
Bergen County Improvement Authority says it needs the documents from BRMC LP to make an informed decision about the hospital's future. Options include selling it outright or finding another operator. BRMC LP has asked the county to fund $87 million in capital improvements over six years, a request that prompted county officials to reexamine the hospital's future.
The suit requests that a judge order the company to turn the documents over to the county and pay the county's legal fees.
