The Justice Department has recovered more than $3 billion under the False Claims Act in the fiscal 2011 year, with $2.4 billion in recoveries involving fraud committed against federal healthcare programs.

Since Jan. 2009, the government has recovered a total of $8.7 billion under the False Claims Act — the largest three-year total in the DOJ's history. Since Jan. 2009, the DOJ has used the False Claims Act to recover more than $6.6 billion in federal healthcare dollars.
Of the $3 billion recovered this year, $2.8 billion of that was recouped in whistleblower cases. Qui tam suits hit a peak at 638 this past year. They usually stand in the 300s and low 400s, according to the release.
