Joseph V. Sakran, MD. Director of Emergency General Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore). When Dr. Sakran was 17 years old, he was shot in the neck and required immediate medical attention. After a long recovery, he was inspired to work in medicine and dedicate his life to stopping violence. As director of emergency general surgery at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Sakran treats patients suffering from several forms of trauma. The American College of Surgeons awarded him its 2014 Surgical Volunteerism Award for his work providing relief to tsunami and earthquake victims across the globe.
