Governors Want Flexibility in State Medicaid Programs

Republican governors from 29 states sent a letter to federal lawmakers arguing a need for greater flexibility in Medicaid payments, according to a FoxNews.com report.

The governors aim to reduce Medicaid spending by allowing states to change their Medicaid programs without requiring federal approval, a requirement that currently applies to states receiving federal money for Medicaid. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, policy chairman of the Republican governors, said states should be able to receive Medicaid funds as a block grant, according to the report. Some Democrats, such as Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, are also requesting more flexibility in states' Medicaid spending.

Opponents to increased flexibility say there are few options for changes in Medicaid, according to the report.
