Access MediQuip Responds to GAO Report on Hospital Device Spending

Access MediQuip, a national provider of surgical implant management solutions, has issued a response to a Government Accountability Office report that identified problems in hospital spending on implantable medical devices.

In the report, titled "Medicare: Lack of Price Transparency May Hamper Hospitals' Ability to Be Prudent Purchasers of Implantable Medical Devices," GAO noted there is a lack of transparency when determining the price paid for implantable medical devices and also noted the prices paid for the same device can vary significantly by hospital.

Access MediQuip's response speaks to the company's suite of surgical implant management solutions that aim to address the issues identified in the GAO report and "solve the problems facing surgical device implants," said Prakash Patel, MD, CEO of Access MediQuip, in the release.

"The increasingly high costs with surgical devices coupled with a poor coordination of recalls, off-label use and implant acquisition are drawing increasing scrutiny by many groups," he said. "The stakes are high for individual patients, hospitals and other surgical facilities, surgeons, health plans and device manufacturers, and in many ways it is one of the final large unmanaged frontiers in healthcare management."
