Out of the 200 companies heralded by Fortune as most innovative for 2024, 44 are in healthcare and 21 are health systems.
More healthcare companies are represented among the top 200 this year than last, which is worth noting given that Fortune shortened the 2024 list from 300 companies to 200. Alphabet, Apple and Microsoft secured the first, second and third spot on this year's list — marking a jump for Apple into the second spot, and overtaking Salesforce, after ranking No. 6 last year.
Fortune sought to recognize companies "transforming industries from the inside out." The ranking is informed by scores based on three dimensions, each weighted equally: product innovation, process innovation and innovation culture.
Product innovation is 50% weighted by patent score and 50% by the opinions of experts and prospective customers. Process innovation involves an examination of company operations, with input from employees, experts and potential customers factored. Innovation culture factors employee opinions and external experts' perspectives on how well a company encourages internal entrepreneurship and creativity.
Fortune partnered with Statista for the development of the ranking, which began with a list of more than 25,000 companies up for consideration and a call for entry on Fortune.com, with any eligible company allowed to register and participate in the ranking.
