California is the most diverse state in the country, and West Virginia is the least, according to WalletHub's 2024 ranking published Sept. 17.
The same two states were ranked the most and least diverse in last year's edition.
For the ranking, the financial services company compared all 50 states across six key dimensions: socio-economic diversity, cultural diversity, economic diversity, household diversity, religious diversity and political diversity. The dimensions were evaluated based on 14 relevant metrics. Each state's weighted average was then calculated using the grades each metric received on a 100-point scale. A full breakdown of the methodology can be found here.
