5 radiologists, radiologic tech workforce stats to know

There are about 31,960 radiologists employed in the U.S., earning a mean wage of $353,960, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The bureau gathered data about radiologists and radiologic and MRI technicians between May 2022 and May 2023. The data, published April 1, 2024, includes wages, job growth, setting and other employment statistics.

Here are five things to know about the radiologist workforce:

1. The three settings that hire the most radiologists are offices of physicians (20,000), general medical and surgical hospitals (5,730) and medical and diagnostic laboratories (4,110).

2. The top-paying settings are outpatient care centers ($434,770), offices of physicians ($392,790) and medical and diagnostic laboratories ($366,270).

3. Radiologic and MRI technologists jobs are expected to grow by 6% between 2023 to 2033.

4. There are 221,170 radiologic and MRI techs in the U.S. and they earn a mean annual wage of $75,250.

5. Most radiologic techs work in general medicine and surgical hospitals (129,430), followed by offices of physicians (40,390) and medical and diagnostic laboratories (16,650).
