Industry experts are split over whether the healthcare superbill will survive ICD-10 implementation in 2013, according to a Government Health IT report.
Daniel Duvall, medical officer for the CMS Hospital and Ambulatory Policy Group, said that medical practices should create an ICD-10 version of the superbill to prepare for ICD-10 implementation. However, Jean Searfoss, an attorney representing healthcare providers and healthcare systems, said she believes the superbill will not be preserved through the ICD-10 transition. She said ICD-10, which adds a significant number of codes, will make superbills prohibitively long.
According to the report, ICD-10 could inflate a superbill from two pages to as much as 48 pages. Providers would have to stick to only high-level codes to avoid a significantly longer superbill, Ms. Searfoss said.
