University of Virginia Health System, based in Charlottesville, has reported a net income of $180.4 million for the last fiscal year, up 52.5 percent from the previous fiscal year, according to a Daily Progress report.
The increase in income was attributed to higher admissions stemming from shorter hospital stays. Hospital officials said the construction of the new UVa Transitional Care Hospital houses the longest-staying patients, opening the main medical center's capacity to 20 more patients each day, according to the report.
Other factors boosting the health system's income were lower costs and increased non-operating income.
