California has the highest number of Medicare beneficiaries in the United States, according to State Health Facts, a project of the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.
The data has been compiled from analysis of the state/county penetration file released by CMS in 2012.
There are more than 49 million Medicare beneficiaries in the United States in total. The top ten states with the highest number of Medicare beneficiaries, according to the data, are:
• California — 5 million
• Florida — 3.52 million
• Texas — 3.18 million
• New York — 3.09 million
• Pennsylvania — 2.35 million
• Ohio — 1.97 million
• Illinois — 1.90 million
• Michigan — 1.72 million
• North Carolina — 1.56 million
• New Jersey — 1.37 million
