In partnership with the South Carolina Hospital Association, the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has unveiled a new website that displays various financial and operational data of the state's 60 hospitals.
SCHealthData.org lists the licensed beds, bed days, overall occupancy rate, Medicaid occupancy rate, total revenue, total profit/loss, Medicaid disproportionate share hospital payments and five-year profit/loss for every South Carolina hospital.
Last year, the state similarly posted hospital financial data. State Medicaid Director Tony Keck said the new website comes in response to the growing demand for healthcare price and cost transparency. SCHA President Thornton Kirby added the hospital association is working with the state so state residents can have "the best source for information about healthcare costs."
According to the data, McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, the flagship of McLeod Health, was the most profitable hospital in the state in 2012, recording more than $159.7 million on $627 million of revenue. However, the system's 155-bed hospital in Loris posted the biggest loss — $20.6 million — in 2012.
The five most profitable hospitals in South Carolina from 2008 through 2012, according to state data were:
• McLeod Regional Medical Center (Florence) — $346 million
• Trident Medical Center (Charleston) — $284.5 million
• Roper Hospital (Charleston) — $258 million
• St. Francis Hospital (Greenville) — $247.4 million
• Lexington Medical Center (West Columbia) — $244.8 million
