Thirty-four of the 88 hospitals in Arkansas, or 38 percent, reported net losses in fiscal year 2012, according to an Arkansas Business report.
That figure is higher than the 35 percent Arkansas Business found last year. An official with the Arkansas Hospital Association told the publication that roughly one-third of Arkansas hospitals lose money every year, putting the most recent figures above historical norms.
St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock, the flagship of St. Vincent Health System and part of Englewood, Colo.-based Catholic Health Initiatives, lost $39.3 million in 2012, the most of any Arkansas hospital. St. Vincent President and CEO Peter Banko submitted a statement to Arkansas Business, attributing the losses to lagging commercial payer reimbursements, sequestration and health information technology costs.
