Regence BlueCross Opts Out of Utah Business Exchange

Regence BlueCross BlueShield of Utah will not participate in the state's new health insurance exchange for small businesses, according to a report from The Salt Lake Tribune.

Regence has sold coverage through Utah's Avenue H insurance marketplace for years but will not sell policies to Avenue H members through the new marketplace created under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to the report. Utah state lawmakers established Avenue H, an internet portal, in 2009 to facilitate healthcare reform.

Regence declined to comment on the reasons behind its withdrawal from the marketplace, according to the report. The state has not yet released a list of approved health plans and rates for the exchange, which will open for enrollment Oct. 1.
