New Mexico Asks Feds for Health Insurance Exchange Help

New Mexico has requested federal partnership to set up its health insurance exchange, backing off its original announcement that it would build and operate the online marketplace by itself, according to a report by the Albuquerque Journal.

State officials ceded they would need federal assistance to establish the computer system infrastructure necessary to begin enrollment on the online marketplace by October this year. Plans purchased on the exchanges will go into effect in 2014.

New Mexico will continue to manage the "front end" of the websites: posting qualifying health plans, screening customers to determine if they're eligible for premium subsidies or government insurance and handling customer service. The partnership would last through October 2014, after which New Mexico may choose to continue the partnership model or take control of the operations and infrastructure of the exchange.
